A war breaks out in a fortress where the Grey Knight General, Bazuso, defends against a mercenary army. According to naysayers, Bazuso has killed over 30 individuals and murdered a bear with his bare hands. Despite the reward offered by their leader and the fame that would result from killing Bazuso, the mercenaries did not dare to attack him because of his reputation. Suddenly, a man named Guts emerges from the mercenaries and confronts Bazuso. The man was a common mercenary, wielding a ten-coin steel sword. Guts accepted Bazuso’s challenge for a reward of seven silver coins. The two warriors hit it off from the get-go, with Guts taking the upper hand against Bazuso. Onlookers were surprised to see that Bazuso was taking all of the hits. With a series of attacks, an ordinary man wielding a cheap sword managed to put pressure on Bazuso. Guts won the match by landing a blow on Bazuso’s body, eventually leaving him open to a direct attack in the head, killing Bazuso. As a result of Guts’ victory, the mercenary group proceeded to take over the fortress. Meanwhile, Griffith’s Band of Hawks watches from the corner as the mercenaries gain the upper hand. As Guts claims his salary and reward, he is offered the opportunity to become a samurai, to which he declines, stating that he dislikes being constrained. Guts comes across a band of bandits who intend to kill him along the way. But, much to the chagrin of the spectators, Guts managed to kill two bandits. Griffith, as it turns out, has been ordering some of his men to deal with Guts. Griffith dispatches Casca to take over Corcus’ messed-up plan, but it fails due to Guts’ repeated attacks and advances. Fortunately, Griffith intervened before Casca was killed by Guts. To counter Guts, Griffith drew his sword and landed a single blow on Guts’ chest, knocking him out. When Guts wakes up, he finds himself inside a tent, with Casca naked by his side. He inquires about his whereabouts, to which Casca responds with a punch to the chest and stomach. Outside, Guts discovers that Casca has been lying beside him for two days and nights, as ordered by Griffith, to keep him warm and alive. Guts is approached by the man of the hour, who introduces himself. Griffith also returned his sword, telling him that he couldn’t wield it very well. They walked around the Band of the Hawks’ enclave until they reached a hilltop where they could talk quietly. At that moment, Guts inquired as to why Griffith had missed his vital spot from their previous encounter, to which Griffith replied that he wanted Guts to accompany him. Guts, however, turned down his offer and instead challenged him to a one-on-one match. If Guts wins, Griffith will have the same injury as him, whereas if Griffith wins, Guts will be his soldier. While Griffith gains the upper hand, Guts reverses the situation by biting through Griffith’s sword, surprising him. Guts took advantage of the situation, digging his fists into Griffith’s pretty face. He also began making fun of Griffith for how their battle played out in front of his men. Griffith won the match after twisting Guts’ shoulder joint in an unexpected turn of events. Before the episode ends, Casca remarks that Griffith has never done anything significant for anybody except Guts. Griffith, on the other hand, told Guts that he wanted him to assist him in establishing a country for himself. He also stated that he would decide where Guts would die.
